The much better way to do this would be to not have a single primary, but it's postgres so there aren't any mainline options to do this yet :(
BDR might do it but has some app implications, which at our scale would be tricky to avoid.
The strategic result of this weakness is we're not really adding new data models to my beloved postgres, they're going to cassandra instead.
